I loved being a presenter last fall ( you can see my workshop here ) and I would have signed up to speak again, but I was supposed to be traveling the first weekend in May. Due to the COVID-19 confinement, I'll be at home instead of traveling, which means you'll find me glued to the computer screen watching this years' congress workshops.

]]>As a clay artist, there's a lot I could say about plates. They're a deceptively important object in the kitchen and any connoisseur of handmade pottery knows that not all ceramic plates are created equal.
While I do love functional ceramics for everyday use, today there’s another kind of ceramic plate I want to talk about—and it's not the kind you eat on. Plates also serve as works of art and they can play an important role in interior design.
Let's take a look at the different kinds of plates you may consider using in your design concept.
Different kinds of decorative ceramic plates
If you're interested in incorporating ceramic plates into your interior design, first you should consider all of the different kinds of plates available to you. Afterwards, you can decide if you want to use a stand-alone piece, a collection of different kinds of plates, or an assortment of similar plates.
Collector Plates
Decorative plates have been sought after as ornamental decoration as far back as the 14th century, when merchants first introduced Chinese products to Europe. Delicate decorative dishes became popular collectibles among European nobility for their novelty, rarity and beauty.
Painted Plates
Pablo Picasso knew that ceramic vessels and plates allow a painter to bring exuberance to the room. He started creating decorative plates and other ceramic artwork in the 1940's and continued until the end of his life.

Today, there are many contemporary artists painting unique and beautiful designs on plates.
Artistic Plates
I create painted plates , sgraffito designed plates , as well as minimalist handmade plates for dining or decorating. Additionally, I'm creating new collections of decorative plates into the world of interior design. I create artistic plates that fuse contemporary design with wild scenes from roaring beaches and pristine forests. They have texture and layers. Sometimes they have sand or natural elements fused with the glaze.
Collections of Plates
More commonly, you'll see artistic compositions created with plates. The plates can be decorated, plain colors, or even plain white. What's important is how and where they're placed. The designer must craft a careful balance for the collection to be pleasing to the eye .
How to use decorative plates in your interior design
Plates can hang by themselves, in collections or mixed-matched groups. Plates allow for great design versatility, with the added advantage that the unique style of the designer shines through in their placement.
Let’s look at some ways to use decorative ceramic plates in your interior design.

Filling a large, open space
Do you have a large, blank wall that needs decoration, but you don’t want to over-power the room with a huge painting? A collection of plates can help fill large spaces, without becoming a dominating force in the room’s decor. Find your own, unique arrangement in the middle of the wall for an original art installation.
Bringing character to unexpected places
The kitchen or dining room are common places to hang a few plates to bring life to your walls, but how about on your deck or patio?
In Andalusia—Southern Spain—as well as in Morocco, decorative ceramic plates are used alongside hanging plants to decorate beautiful large patios. They create spaces that make you want to pull up a chair and relax for hours.
Filling in and adding curves
Plates can be used on book shelves and above fireplaces to break up the collection of strict horizontal and vertical lines. They also work well in corners or thin strips of wall space that need some color and attention.
Step-by-step instructions for hanging plates like a pro
Check out this article by Fred Gonsowski on how to hang your plates like a pro! He covers: stacking plates up a wall and looking at visual weights, directed action of images on plates, looking at different groupings of plates that might inspire you, grouping plates around a center item “focal point”, and composing an arrangement on the floor and getting it up onto the wall.

How to hang your plates and platters
There are a number of ways that you can hang your plates on the wall, some are more permanent than others.
I use the metal-spring plate hangers that can be purchased in hardware and home-supply shops or online. They're very easy to use and remove and I've never had a plate fall off of the wall. Just make sure you're using the right size, so that the plate fits snug into the holder.
Create your own design

]]>In this online workshop I walk you through a bit of background, the ingredients and techniques for two very different clay decoration techniques: Cuerda Seca (also known as dry cord) and Mocha Diffusion.
The Cuerda Seca ("dry cord" in English) technique was first used in central Asia in the 14th century. The water-soluble glazes are separated on the surface by thin lines of oil and pigment. This allows you to create intricate designs without the glazes running together. This decoration technique was commonly used for tiles and in decorative pieces.
Mocha Diffusion is a chemical reaction between an alkali clay body and an acidic component that results in stunning, organic designs that are reminiscent of dendrite formations, or the roots from plants and trees. With very little set-up and time you can get achieve outstanding designs.

Do you want to make your own Christmas presents?
In our 2 hour course, you’ll learn the basics of hand-building, and create your own masterpieces. Make beautiful cups, candle-holders or Christmas ornaments to decorate your home or give as gifts.
The course fee of 75€ includes all the essential tools and materials, two instructors, tapas and wine.
Invite your friends, or come alone. There is a 20 person max in this workshop.
You can pick up your finished ceramic pieces one weeks after the workshop.
We have the great privilege to serve you four unique wines from Celler Comunica . Their wines illustrate the grapes’ origin, from vineyards on granite soils on the unique estate of Mas d’en Cosme in Montsant.
We will serve one white and three reds:
- Comunica “La Pua” (2018) . Grapes: 70% White Grenache, 15% Grey grenache 15% Hairy Grenache. Soils: Calcareous clay, granitic sand, slate.

Now in its 17th edition, Terrania is an International Ceramic Festival attracting clay artists and art lovers from near and far. The festival takes place in Montblanc, in the province of Tarragona.
Montblanc is an incredibly interesting medieval site—In fact, one of the best preserved in Catalonia. The best option to see the village is to leave your vehicle outside the old city wall and visit the old quarter on foot.
A pioneering ceramics event in Spain
Since its inception, Terrania has been a pioneering event in Catalonia thanks to the quality of the work on exhibit and the number of people in attendance.
One of the main objectives of Terrania is to spread the word about Artistic and Decorative Ceramics , little known in this part of the world. When talking about ceramics, most people here are referring to traditional pottery and household utensils. For this reason, the festival tries to highlight extraordinary fine art ceramic exhibitions and high quality technical demonstrations.
And that they did! I was very impressed by the high quality and wide range of work that I saw during my visit. More than thirty-five artists participated from Catalonia, Spain, France, Belgium, Finland, Holland, Switzerland, and more.

Main attractions
The main attractions of the Terrània Festival are the hands-on workshops and the market, held in the Romanesque-Gothic style Convent and cloister of Sant Francesc (13th century).
Beyond this spot, the festival spreads out through the center of town, held in small museums and local galleries. Each site is just a few minutes walk from each other and you can easily visit the entire festival in a day.
My favorite exhibitions
Binomial Tree-Man in the Lands of the Ebro by Joan Panisello
Teacher, c eramist and p assionate innovator, Joan Panisello was ready and willing to have an enthusiastic chat about his experimentation with shapes, textures and colors. Member of the International Academy of Ceramics, Joan has participated in over 225 international exhibitions and received over 23 awards for his extraordinary work.
His asymmetrical vessels with textures taken from tree bark were a real treat for me, as I have also been experimenting with tree forms and textures. My only wish is that I'd had more time to sit and chat with Joan. It's a real pleasure to find artists so enthusiastic about sharing their work!
Human, The Unfair Destroyer by Roser Oter
I was blown away by the main exhibition in the Cloister of Sant Francesc by Ceramic Artist Roser Oter. Her sculptural work is of deep sociopolitical importance. Using small, simple clay figures and structural forms made out of clay, porcelain and sponge, Roser clearly communicates a strong message about inequality, estrangement and social injustice. Her work tells the story of a profound disappointment in human kind that so many of us feel today.

My favorite workshops
Raku in the microwave
I loved watching local Ceramicist Montse Llanas ' workshop doing raku firing with microwaves! She had three microwaves going non-stop and a long line of participants who were eager to paint their pendants and see the magic happen. The tickets (just 3€ each) were all sold out by the time I got there, but I can't wait to try this at home!
Pre-Columbian clay stamps
I did have the great pleasure of joining Carolina Segre for the last workshop on her European tour. She explained the origins and significance of pre-Columbian ceramic stamps. Carolina has dedicated many years to studying this sacred art form and she enthusiastically shared her knowledge and techniques for replicating ancient techniques.
Her work is done in homage to the principles of reciprocity of our ancestral peoples. I look forward to experimenting with—and sharing— some of the knowledge she so kindly shared with me.
The Sellos Ancestrales project is dedicated to the research and dissemination of pre-Columbian design and stamps. Keep en eye out for a documentary coming out soon!
There were many more interesting workshops, artists and their wonderful work. Far too many to mention them all here. I thought the Terrania Ceramics Festival was a fantastic event and I highly recommend checking out future editions.
