Drying is one of the quietest stages in pottery, yet it has a major effect on whether a wheel-thrown piece reaches the kiln safely. A mug, bowl or vase may look firm on the outside while moisture remains trapped in its base or thickest walls. If that moisture escapes too quickly, cracks, warping and uneven shrinkage can follow.

Humidity is the amount of water vapour already present in the air. When the surrounding air is damp, less water can evaporate from freshly thrown clay, so the drying process slows. In dry conditions, evaporation accelerates, particularly around rims, handles, feet and other exposed areas.
