An Artist’s Odyssey: Chasing Ghosts, Masters and The Business of Art, by Alan Pierce

Alan Pierce has recently published An Artists' Odyssey, an e-book that provides insight and perspective into the joys and challenges of being a professional artist. Alan was kind enough to invite me to contribute a few words of advice for aspiring creatives.

Alan has been a professional artist and private art instructor for over 20 years. He has exhibited and taught on three continents: in Paris, France, Jakarta, Indonesia and Portland, Oregon. He had his first international exhibition at 17 and began teaching art at the age of 18.

100% of the proceeds go to fundraising

For each e-book sold, 100% of the proceeds go to Harapan Project, an NGO that supports the impoverished community and children of Sumbawa, Indonesia.

Harapan Project cooperates with communities in the development of their well being and the promotion of peace and freedom, with a profound respect of their cultures, beliefs and customs. Harapan Project helps communities of Indonesia to overcome such situation in the following areas:

  • Covering the basic surviving needs regarding nutrition and access to drinking water
  • Health
  • Education
  • Basic infrastructures

Forward By Nyoman Nuarta

Nyoman Nuarta is the creator of the world's’ third largest statue, Garuda Wisnu Kencana, located in Bali, Indonesia. Other works include: The Indonesian Proclamation Monument in Jakarta and The Jalesveya Jayamahe-Monjaya Monument in Surabaya. Mr Nuarta is the 2018 recipient of the Padma Shri Award, India’s fourth highest civilian award, presented by President Ram Kovind in New Delhi.

An Artist's Odyssey

An Artist's Odyssey compiles Alan’s work from his most productive and transformative period from 2004 to 2010.  During this time, Alan’s work shifted from darker works to an exploration of the spectrum of light.

The book starts with a description of Alan’s passion for art as well as his adventures and challenges along the way. He describes the evolution of his primary oil painting style—Shape Construction. Next he details the journey into the study of shadow and darkness. Finally, he showcases watercolor works. Alan highlights historical norms in creating large paintings and explains his technical process.

The book concludes with final reflections and a section titled The Art of Business: An Insider View. This section is a synopsis of business lessons gleaned from Alan’s professional experience as an artist over the past twenty years. He combines this with best practices derived from owning and running multiple businesses.

Goals

We hope that with your help over the next five months we can reach and exceed our goal of selling 1,000 e-books. This would provide $11,990 in funding for the Harapan Sumbawa Project. We’d also like to spread awareness for the cause by reaching 2,000,000 people through social sharing campaign. Please help the children aided by the Harapan Sumbawa Project by purchasing this book and sharing this post on your social media accounts as the children of Sumbawa are truly in great need of medical attention, education and basic living necessities.
